I enjoyed getting a view into Filipino culture and their American experience, a view I was previously lacking.

A little after the family had moved from the Philippines to California, the father leaves them. Great book, I would recommend this book to everyone. But that is just Roley keeping it real.

It’s a really amazing book, and if you read soon and just take it in, you’ll really like it too! We Should Never Meet: It is this vacillating protectiveness of toley mother, however, that unites Gabe with his brother Tomas and hints at some small hope for both to acquire some of the gifts of paternity that America has to offer them as American sons.

Even though this novel was relatable and a simple read, I had hoped for a more satisfying ending. I completely understood the Fedco scene and later on the scene at the pharmacy when the salesgirl pointedly ignored their mother and acted like she was nonperson, the Asian mother who shies away from sales people and feels ignored and shunted aside, and people who look down on them with the broken English.

Does that make us sick? Two brothers are sons of a Filipino mother and a white American father. The narrator is younger brother Gabe, who tries to avoid the tar pit of Tomas’s waywardness, yet moves ever closer to embracing it. Although I appreciated how Gabe and his family reflect some characteristics of Filipinos I know, they are rlley flat as characters and Gabe’s coming-of-age at the end is simultaneously predictable roleey underdeveloped.
