Unfortunately, in the second half of the book, politics begins to take on a much larger role, and there are a few long chapters in which the dinner table conversations and debates of Andreu’s grandmother and other relatives are recounted at length, and without a greater knowledge of the historical context, the significance of a lot of this was somewhat lost on me and it sometimes became a little tedious and hard to get through.
Would love to see the Oscar-nominated film as well and read the author’s next 2 novels in the series — once they are available in English.

Fearing for his life, Farriol decides to flee and cross the border into France. I’ve only been learning Catalan for three months, so this book, p with small print and a lot of words crammed on each page, took me quite a while to get through, but it was definitely worth the effort.

A coming of age story set in post-Civil-War Spain with fascist occupation in rural Catalunya. I’m just not certain that I would look forward to reading it, since the character seems to have definitvely left all that was good and positive behind him. The novel covers some three years, in which the protagonist and his friends discover their sexuality, the deceit permeating the world of adults, the contradictions, the lack of justice and the huge sense of disillusion in the country.

In particular, the character of the grandmother was inspiring and her insights on life as relevant today as they must have been in postwar Spain. I believe our youth never abandons us, the passing years simply bury it deep down and it finds it harder and harder to get out. Spared grandiose declarations or political statements, the reader is introduced to the horrors of life for the defeated through the detail of their everyday lives: Andreu begins to reject his family full of lies and deceptions.
